Donald  R. Vines, for whom the I.P.O.F. tournament is named, was born in Montreal, Quebec Canada on January 28th 1935. By trade, Don was an accountant and pursued an entrepreneurial career in sales and business/financial consulting in both Canada and abroad.

Don was an accomplished tennis player and was a long standing member of the Toronto Lawn and Tennis Club. He was also well known for participating in community events and charitable causes.

A consulting project took Don from Toronto to Las Vegas in August of 1988. Being known as an avid backgammon and bridge player, Don turned to poker and won his first tournament at Sam’s Town Casino in March of 1989 which qualified him for a seat in the World Series of Poker.

In 1996, Don began coordinating the N.P.A.F. Poker Tournaments with Jim and Regina Mitchell and Dan Camillo. Because of Don’s knowledge of tournament poker, his acute business sense and the contacts he made playing in the World Series of Poker every year, he was able to obtain sponsorships. Don introduced us to his good friend and co-author, Tom McEvoy. Tom also became our friend and contributor to the tournaments. Don also introduced us to poker professionals T. J. Cloutier and Phil Hellmuth. With their assistance along with other notable professionals, the tournaments continued to flourish. Because of Don’s efforts and business sense, the yearly poker tournaments grew.

Don, along with Tom McEvoy, co-authored the book, How To Win No-Limit Hold-em Tournaments. At the time of Don’s death in April 2007, he was married to author, Dana Smith who continues to support the tournaments.
